If you get the chance today, please read my Press Coverage column at The Sporting Blog. It’s about 2,500 words and much of it would be stuff I’d put in the space below. So read it there, please.

Today’s show talks about the return of the American sportswriter after a long fortnight in Canada. We also talk about the hockey finale as well as Gander, Newfoundland…the new symbol for NBC’s complete lack of respect for the American sports fan.

On non-sports topics, we discuss more about the spying on your kids story from last week — I think I dug my hole deeper here — and the news that Anderson Cooper may be in line for Katie Couric’s job, which leads to my point that cable news people have no souls.

  1. First of all, thanks for getting this podcast online so early this morning; It was greatly enjoyed during my ride to the mountain. On the topic of the lasting image from the Olympics, mine was Ryan Miller after the Crosby goal, head hung, presumably shielding his tears from the camera. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Sabres fan, or at least am becoming one once more after having fallen away from hockey following the last labor stoppage. Watching the game yesterday, my feelings were protective over Miller, and while I’m not a sufficient wordsmith to adequately describe them, I can imagine it’s a lesser incarnation of the feelings parents have watching their kids compete in sports. While I certainly wanted America to win, above all else, I wanted the outcome to be something Miller himself could be proud of. It’s hard to think that given sufficient time Miller wouldn’t be proud of his achievements over the last couple weeks, but I don’t think that that time has come yet, and watching him languish after the loss was heartbreaking.

I will comment here instead of the write up for Friday. You were talking on the podcast how it seems that the Olympics have been on NBC for ever.

I am not sure when NBC got the Olympics, but at least in 1980 they were on ABC. I think at some point they might have even been on CBS in the 60′s.

As far as the Olympic song, my guess it belongs to the Olympics. I know they used the song when the Olympics were on ABC.

  3. Haven’t listened yet but the SN column was pure gold (though I am sorry, NOT tears of gold. I wish I had whatever Plashke was smoking. Just a little).

Sure I;ll have more to say post-show but the column was great.
