Josh Zerkle of KSK and With Leather joins the show to preview the upcoming football season. Did you hear, football starts. Tonight. Yes, tonight. We talk about that.

But first, we talk about Rosh Hashanah. Should I have been taping a show during high holidays? Is it okay if I was eating apples and honey the entire time?

Zerkle is a part of the Blogger Fantasy League, sponsored by P&G. What’s that, you ask? Well, internet friend, go to the Facebook page and you can find out for yourself and potentially win fabulous prizes in the process. Now, before we proceed, I’ve been told by our legal department that we need to disclose some things first. So let’s disclose:

“The P&G Blogger Fantasy League (BFL) is a group of 12 digital sports influencers competing on the NFL.com fantasy platform for the chance to win P&G product, a donation to a local charity, and a trip to Super Bowl XLV, all furnished by P&G. The NFL Entities have not offered or sponsored the sweepstakes in any way.”

You see that? DIGITAL SPORTS INFLUENCERS! I have a feeling someone is getting new business cards!!!!!

Zerkle and I use our digital influence to talk about P&G’s leap of faith associating their brands with the likes of…us. Huge companies have been throwing money at blogs for a long time (if any huge company would like to throw some money this way, you know how to get in touch with me) but this sponsorship deal is a little different than most. We’re part of teams. Zerkle is on Team Vicks and I’m on Team Gillette. The P&G brands are putting a great deal of faith in the fact that we won’t screw this up. We talk about how we’re too smart to do just that…until Zerkle makes a few jokes about inappropriate ways to use and promote P&G products, of course. (Note: That line just gave at least three PR people in a NYC office heart palpitations.)

We also talk about Brian Bassett of The Jets Blog, guest of our show and this week’s guest on Punte’s show. He’s not only a great guest, but Zerkle points out that he’s a great model for this whole blogging business. It’s funny because being in a room with 11 other “bloggers” — especially when you’re suddenly independent — you really notice the huge companies represented there. Comcast, CBS, AOL, ESPN…we may be “bloggers” but suddenly that legalese is more important than ever. And maybe — or certainly — guys like Bassett are the model to follow.

Zerkle and I talk ad nauseam about the T.Ocho show and ponder if anyone will actually watch. What, then, is the value of Twitter if both T. and Ocho can have millions of followers but only a handful of that number will actually tune in to watch them on TV? Can other forms of traditional media figure out how to capitalize on Twitter followers? Or, is Versus looking at the actual show on TV as a means to an end? Put something on TV that tens of thousands may watch and cut it up in easily digestible (and embeddable) snipits for millions to consume online. It will be an interesting thing to watch…even if we don’t actually watch the show.

Then…FOOTBALL! Who is going to win this year? What teams do we think will come out of nowhere to surprise people? Can the Lions(?!?!) be that team? It’s always someone, so we throw some darts at the wall. Carolina? San Fran? Cleveland?@?!

Zerkle and I also debate the impact Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan will have in Washington before breaking down tonight’s first game by wondering if anyone can beat the Saints. The answer: don’t bet on it until someone does.

Thanks for listening, Happy Jew Year to all. Thanks to Zerkle. Thanks go P&G (sponsor, sponsor, sponsor). Thanks to football for coming back.
