ON THE DL
Tim Whitaker, Editor of Philly Weekly, hits the DL
Tim Whitaker, editor of Philadelphia Weekly, joined the show to talk with Dan about his career and how the landscapes of both the city, and the industry, have changed in his 13 years with Philly Weekly.
In the power struggle between blogs and newspapers, Tim (and PW) falls somewhere in the middle, so it’s really interesting to hear his take.
Talking to an editor is much different than talking to a reporter or columnist because he’s responsible for what you read in a much different way. I’m not sure I fully understood the psychology involved in being an editor of a weekly. It’s not just proofreading stories, for those out there who think anyone can be an editor. Tim has some interesting perspective, especially working with younger writers.
Tim was editor of PhillySport magazine and wrote a book on Dick Allen, so we delve into the world of sports, and compare modern athletes to those of a generation ago, trying to figure out where the disconnect with the media started. I think we blame Mike Schmidt. Ha.
Oh, and this podcast has officially become as old as me. Happy 30th, DL.
