ON THE DL
Drew Magary of KSK Livens Up the DL
Drew Magary – aka Big Daddy Drew – joins the show to talk about his book, his website(s) and what it’s like being funny.
We talk about the many jobs Drew has, from his day job in advertising to Kissing Suzy Kolber to his work with Deadspin to his upcoming book. All while having a family. Yes, as it turns out, he is the Don Draper of the sports blogosphere. Is the real Drew Magary dead and this man took over his life? We find out.
We talk about the Buzz Bissinger situation, but it’s not what you think. Buzz blurbed Drew’s book, so we get the scoop on how that came to be. Drew actually has some really interesting analogies to the Bissinger/Costas fallout that I’ve never heard before. We get into that, and also talk about how something as simple as starting a sports blog can both get you noticed and make you relevant in the world of sports media. If you’re good at it.
We get in depth about how the collaborative that is KSK works, and if he’s ever read anything from someone else that made him want to take it down. Has there ever been anything on the site that he wanted taken down? We also talk about his lazy writing style and how it does take a lot of effort and time time to, in fact, come off that lazy.
We talk more about his Deadspin column. Drew made the point that he hates blogs that are all about the author, and even goes so far as to say that writers (he uses the name Lupica) talk way too much about themselves and their families and nobody cares. But Drew invokes personal stories all the time, so we debate the process of when it’s okay to talk about yourself and when it’s too much. Basically, it’s okay if you’re making fun of yourself and it’s okay if what you’re writing is actually pertinent to the story and interesting. Pick your spots, says Drew.
Then, as he IS a football writer, we talk about the NFL. What are his thoughts on Tom Brady? What does he think of the Ocho Cinco situation? Did anyone see this Vince Young situation coming, and is it a big deal at all that he had a gun in his car? We also talk about the Karma that is catching up to Shawne Merriman and the Patriots, and find out that Al Davis is both Jewish, and filthy. I knew the second part, but honestly didn’t know the first. Or didn’t want to admit it.
We end with a nice rip on the Vikings and some more hilarity from one of the funniest guys in the blogosphere. Honestly, Drew is a funny dude, and I hope I was able to keep up.
