PODCAST: ON THE DL

We talk about Favre-fest last night. He played great and everything was great and his wife was shown 100 times and everything was great.

Great.

Look, the guy did play very well, and he’s always been a good quarterback, but I’m sick of all the adulation. And frankly, I’m sick of all the adulation for most quarterbacks -- he’s just been around the longest.

And we discuss the number of times a quarterback’s wife is shown on a telecast. Talk about trying to break a World Record (which, by the way, we think is just an stupid cheap gimmick on the part of SportsNation to get some attention in a ‘local-radio’ kind of way). We know its Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that was the reason for the pink on the uniforms, and we know that Deanna Favre is a survivor of that type of cancer. Fine. But it’s all just too much with the Favres. It’s just too much. Michele Tafoya asking what seemed like 30 questions after the game and Brett had enough time for all of them (Tom Brady would have booked it). As Nick points out, hopefully now it can just be about football, especially the next time the two teams face off. Not likely, but hopefully.

Talkin Baseball:

We do a lengthy preview of the Twins vs. Tigers tonight. And I read from an MLB.com piece that could be the worst preview ever written (until I write mine for TSB today of course), which included the following lines:

Who will win this tiebreaker, and how will that team fare against the team with baseball's best record? Everyone is watching. Everyone is waiting to get this postseason party started.

This will be survival of the fittest, baseball-style. It is the sport that settles such ties mano-a-mano, on the field.

It comes down to this.

One more game.

Winner advances, loser goes home.

So who will the loser be? We know one guy who looks like a pretty big loser right now. Miguel Cabrera came home drunk after a night out with the other team’s players and blew a .26 (legal limit is .08) at 6am. That’s REALLY drunk. Oh, it was the day before a huge game in the season, which the Tigers lost the other day 5-1. Word came down  yesterday of his domestic situation and being taken into police custody before getting released.

What should happen to Miggy? Should he be suspended? Kevin Kaduk at Yahoo thinks he should be -- for the rest of the season if the Tigers make the playoffs. We discuss what it would be like if a guy in our town did this, and whether or not a suspension makes sense. This happened before Saturday’s game, so he played two games after the incident. Suspending him now would seem very reactionary to the press, no?

Maybe he needs counseling. Maybe he has a drinking problem. Or maybe this is the first time he’s ever taken a swig. Either way, he needs to apologize to the fans of Detroit, who don’t have much else to root for these days, and get some very public counseling to help fix this situation. If the Tigers lose today, who knows when he’ll be able to fix it.

Oh, and we pick winners of tonight’s game. We each take a side. We should have bet a sandwich.

Political Safari:

Per MJD at Yahoo, Rush Limbaugh wants to buy the Rams. First, leaving Rush out, would you want any polarizing figure to purchase your favorite team? And not polarizing like Mark Cuban is polarizing. This is political, which really gets people going. Could you root for a team run by a guy you hate?

Now, specifically talking about Limbaugh, it’s not like he’s trying to buy the Giants or the 49ers. There are probably a lot of people in St. Louis who like the guy. Keep in mind, the President of the United States was booed at the All-Star Game. George Bush was on a video and people cheered. There are a lot of right-wingers in and around St. Louis, and I’m not just talking about the Blues. Bad pun, sorry.

It’s a good investment opportunity for Limbaugh, but would the league want a guy like that owning one of their teams? Maybe. Doesn’t Roger Goodell’s wife work for Fox News?

Some more announcements about the poker coming today and we recap our head-to-head fantasy competition. We need a bet, so help us out with that.

Thanks for listening.
