PODCAST: ON THE DL

Today’s  show starts with a conversation about socks. And two year olds. And how two year olds sometimes don’t want to pick out socks. And how angry that makes us.

We then talk about the many issues with replay. There was a game in the NBA decided by replay last night. The SNF game with Philly and Dallas was, in part, decided by replay that wasn’t overturned even though the replay seemed to clearly show that the call should have been overturned.

Then news that MLB’s GMs don’t want to visit the replay issue this year. So we discuss those three things to try and wrap our heads around the entire issue. Is there too much technology at the games for the human element to succeed anymore? Should we have referees in the sky overseeing the games? Should we have robots?

Musical Interlude...

We talk about the suicide of German soccer player Robert Enke. I wrote about it today for TSB, but we discuss how your brain can get you to the point where you’d throw yourself in front of a train. It’s something I hope to never have to understand.

We also discuss how depression -- if that is the cause of his decision -- is scary in sports. Sports are an escape for some, but a trap for others.

And we talk about the selfishness it takes to commit suicide, especially leaving behind a wife and child. Again, I hope to never have the true understanding of how a disease can take over your mind to the point where you stop caring not just about yourself, but about your loved ones. The situation is awful, and our thoughts to out to the family and friends who are left.

This was not an easy segment, trust me.

Housekeeping:

Rather than spin it to something else after a segment like that, we dump everything here. I was on the Free Darko podcast this week. It was awesome so please check it out. We talked about Bill Simmons’ assertion that the NBA is cool and MLB is not. Hey, a guy who is plugging a BASKETBALL book is saying how cool BASKETBALL is. Whodathunkit?

Nick brings up the terrible attendance for the Sixers and we discuss the comparison from baseball to basketball in attendance and general interest. Basically, it depends on the market and depends how good the team in your market is. But again, I’m not pushing a book on one of the sports.

We mention the execution of the DC Sniper after seven years in what is a seemingly under-reported story.

We also end on a happier note to talk about the season finale of Mad Men, which was quite possibly the best episode of the show...ever. I didn’t think this season lived up to the billing heading in, but the last two episodes are as good as the show has ever been. Good to have you back, right before you leave.

One last note. Today is Veterans Day. Thank you to all those who serve, especially those Nick and I are friends with and those of you who listen to this show. If we can give you even a few minutes of distraction from what you do every day, it’s worth it for us. For what you do for us, we owe you so much more.
