PODCAST: ON THE DL

Monday morning. A huge week ahead of us, so let’s get right to it.

We start with a brief discussion of the Return of the Tiger. Nick had the golf on and watched Tiger’s -- is there another word than magical for this guy -- comeback and putt on 18 to win, again. The man is amazing.

We then follow up on something that I brought up last week -- ratings. With the President bumping American Idol to Wednesday and Thursday, we wondered what the ratings would be for Idol on Thursday when going up against the NCAA tournament. It turns out, like everything else, Idol destroyed.

The interesting thing is that basketball was a distant third the entire night, which leads to our question about the CBS model. Why pre-empt your top show CSI for a few weeks when basketball is getting less than half the ratings? I’m sure CBS makes up the money on the back end with the National Championship game, but it’s a philosophy we’ll look into with someone at CBS.

Shifting our focus to something that came out late last week, we discuss the recent news made by Colin Cowherd, host of The Herd on ESPN Radio. Cowherd is a ‘sports radio shock jock’ for ESPN. You know, those radio guys that were popular in the ‘90s because they were ‘controversial’ and ‘tell it like it is?’ Yeah, that’s Cowherd. Maybe you’ve heard him. He’s the guy who comes up with totally outlandish points, then spends entire segments creating fake emails and calls (in his ‘stupid radio listener voice’) that nobody would ever actually email or call in with.

Making fun of your audience. Really on the cutting edge of sports talk.

Cowherd, who has been in and out of markets faster than a mother-of-five in a pending snowstorm, is not only back in New York city, but also on the air in Philadelphia. Yes, Mike Tirico’s show didn’t get the numbers needed to compete with 610WIP, so ESPN950 is shuffling the deck, and rather than put on local programming (it may be part of their deal with ESPN that they have a certain number of national hours) they’ve extended Mike and Mike for one hour and filled the second vacant hour with Cowherd.

Personally, well, if you’ve read this far, you know how I feel about Cowherd. So I sent an email to the GM at 950 and offered him my (our) services. For free. Yep, this is not some gimmick. I’ll do a show on 950 for free so the people don’t have to be subjected to Cowherd’s look-down-his-nose-at-the-listener drivel every day.

Listen, I understand he’s been doing this for a long time. And I’m sure someone at ESPN will throw some ridiculous radio statistics at me to show how he’s been successful everywhere he’s ever been. But I know one thing -- the days of talking down to your audience are coming to and end. See, that’s what makes blogs great -- blogs give the listener a voice. Blogs aren’t just for stealing content and making people think it’s your own, like Cowherd’s done for years. No, they give the little guy a voice. The playing field is level now.

The Weekend that Was: We bring in Naveen from Rush the Court to talk about the weekend that was in College Basketball, while taking a look forward to the Final Four.

What was the most surprising thing of the weekend? We think it was the fact that outside of one or two games, this tournament has been pretty boring. One game that wasn’t boring was the Pitt-Nova game, which Naveen was lucky enough to be in the building for. What was the scene like in Boston? And hyperbole be damned, where does this game rank on the list of all-time greats? Is it in the conversation with the Laettner game? (Answer: no.)

We spin it to the announce table. Throughout the tournament, who has he liked? And did Clark Kellogg really compare Danny Green to baking soda? Is this hilarious in a good way or a bad way that the lead analyst -- a guy who is calling the Final Four -- is invoking the names Arm & Hammer while describing versatile basketballers?

We take a look at the Final Four and get predictions on what will happen. And we talk about the drama at Kentucky. Which leads to a discussion about what school you’d send your kid to if he were an All-American. Also, what coach -- independent of school and location -- would you want your kid to play for?

Last, we ask Naveen what Rush the Court has planned for the week leading up to the Final Four. Check it out, as they have some neat stuff coming up.

The Soapbox: Nick goes first to talk about the recent news that Michael Vick is trying to get the court to let him keep his assets, if a bankruptcy judge approves his financial reorganization plan.  Yep, the giant house, the nice cars and the Ms. Pacman machine, too.

Nick feels that if Vick owes people money, those people are entitled to their money. And if selling off his assets is the quickest way to get them their money back, he should be living in a one-room apartment if that’s what he needs to do.

Next, I talk about the Ryan Moats situation. It hits close to home as my friend’s father-in-law passed away this weekend from a long illness. I imagine my friend and his grieving wife being in the situation Moats found his family in and, honestly, it makes me sick to my stomach. This was part of the reason we didn’t talk about this on Friday. I was just too mad. And it’s not just about the death. It’s about people in power. It’s about the fact that a man has a gun and a badge and he thinks that makes him more important than you. Or me. Is your job more important? Perhaps. But as a person, we are all equal. Aren’t we? So why do people in positions of power -- and yes, I reflect this back to our first segment -- think that having a gun or a giant chain full of keys (or a microphone) makes them better than us? How ‘bout it, tough guy? Is your penis THAT small that you need to puff up your chest (and shield your obvious insecurities) to make us think you’re better than we are? You are not better than us.

When someone is in need, and you can help them, you help them. When someone needs to get through a door and you have the ability to open that door -- be it an actual door, a business opportunity or just something that will help a family in need -- open that door. This shouldn’t have to be said.

Housekeeping: Nick takes over the housekeeping as I try to keep my anger in check after two of our three segments today have gotten me a bit out of sorts. A big week for us. Greg Wyshynski from Yahoo tomorrow. Michael Davis, author of Street Gang on Wednesday. ESPN’s Steve Phillips on Thursday to preview the baseball season.

Thanks, as always, for making our little show a part of your day.
