PODCAST: ON THE DL

The hardest thing about doing a daily podcast is filling five days a week with interesting content. The hard thing isn’t finding enough stories, but rather having too many things to discuss.

It’s a good problem to have.

We start with a look at last night. Big storylines in hockey, basketball and baseball. So we start with the biggest storyline of the three...yes, the hockey.

The NHL needs the Caps-Pens series to go at least 15 games, especially if Crosby and Ovechkin are going to put on a show like they did last night. But should the NHL be worried that the series is 2-0? How badly is Gary Bettman rooting for a Penguins win in game three?

We also focus on the budding star that is Alexander Ovechkin. He’s managed to transcend the language barrier many foreign hockey players have trouble overcoming. Even superstars like Sergei Federov were never as big of stars as they could have been in this country. But Ovechkin is doing it. Both Ovechkin and Crosby have reached that point where if a casual sports fan doesn’t know who they are, it’s their fault, not hockey’s. And that’s a good thing for the league...and the game.

Next, we touch on the night in the NBA. Both home teams -- both teams who faced off in last year’s championship round -- lost last night. Should the Lakers be worried or was it just rust? And are the Celtics spent after their hard-fought tussle with the Bulls? And why am I so bad at picking games (does it have something to do with the fact that I haven’t watched much all season)? Join TBJ’s book-off challenge and beat them. I know you’ll beat me.

Last of the big stories from last night is Rick Ankiel going head-first into the wall. He should be okay and nothing was broken, but it was a scary moment in the Cards-Phillies game last night. We hope he’s okay.

Ankiel is a fascinating story. He’s probably the most fascinating baseball story of the last 10 years, going from stud pitcher to out of the league to the lowest of the minors to reconstruct his career. His journey includes everything -- including drug use -- to get him back on top. But do we excuse his PED use because his story is so good?

And speaking of stories, we touch on the A-Rod book (MUCH more on this tomorrow) and ask, do we really have to read it?

Inside the Press Box:

You may not have known, but last week the Sports Emmys were given out. We run down the list of who won and why. We also talk about how NBC and HBO can win so many awards while producing so little sports content when compared to ESPN. ESPN has become Wal-mart. They have everything you’ll need in sports, just nothing that’s the best quality in its department. They have pockets of brilliance, but has ESPN spent too many resources trying to be all things to all sports fans and lost out on some of the quality that other networks have the ability to produce?

Or, simply, are voters tired of sports fans thinking that ESPN is the only show in town. Yes, there are politics in sports as well.

Print’s Not Dead:

We discuss the new Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s marketing campaign asking us to ‘Unplug’ on Sundays. It’s a really smart campaign, but will it lead to more sales. Frankly, I feel overwhelmed every day. There’s just not enough time to read all the content and absorb all the media we want to every day. It’s too much, with the cell phones and the emails and the Twitter and the texting and the blogs and the online video and the, ahem, podcasts.

It’s all too much. So why not unplug a little on Sunday and grab a paper. That said, for me to spend two hours on Sunday reading the paper, I’d have to wake up at 4am. And I do that enough these days.

Housekeeping:

AJ Daulerio on tomorrow. I’m going up to be on The 404 on Thursday. And register for Blogs With Balls already. It’s going to be really cool.
