PODCAST: ON THE DL

We made it to 250. Drinks on us.

It’s been long overdue, but I’m happy to finally have Matt Ufford, from the TV blog Warming Glow and sports blogs With Leather and Kissing Suzy Kolber on the show. Seriously, this was more than a year overdue, so I’m thankful to have Ufford on the show.

We start by discussing why he hasn’t been on the show, and it’s clearly because I’m afraid of him, which (even more clearly) is because he’s a Marine. We get his background into why he chose the US Marine Corps and how he can seem so sane in civilian life? Aren’t Marines all insane? That’s what I always thought.

Ufford takes us through the steps from growing up on Air Force bases to Northwestern University to fighting for our country and how all of that leads someone to become a sports blogger, and eventually a television blogger. It’s been a pretty fascinating journey for the guy, and after hearing his stories, I don’t know if I’m more or less afraid.

We talk about Warming Glow, Uproxx Media’s television blog that Ufford runs. Does he miss the constant deluge of sports every day from running With Leather? Does he get tired of TV being his job when he just wants to watch old re-runs of the Cosby Show and he’s forced to watch some terrible VH1 reality show? Ufford explains that the site offers him a lot of autonomy, and he’s actually happier writing about random happenings in the world of TV than covering sports -- like basketball and baseball -- he really has no interest in covering.

He points out that while sports don’t really matter, TV matters even less, which makes his job a lot more fun to do, as nobody really takes the entertainment industry all that seriously. And if you think about your average sports fan, you’d realize he’s right. Nobody is painting their face for the season premiere of Two and a Half Men.

Speaking of that show, we talk about the Emmys, including Jon Cryer’s victory for best supporting actor. Do the Emmys reward the best in the business, or are they still just a popularity contest? To that end, we discuss what some of the best shows on TV are right now, and what we should be looking forward to in the coming season.

We also play off Neil Patrick Harris’ joke about how short theme songs have gotten to discuss some of our favorites of all time. So you know, I thought of this question while whistling the theme to Inspector Gadget. We talk about the Greatest American Hero, Gummy Bears, Go Bots, Cheers and a lot more stuff from our youth. Are themes really not as good these days, or do we just forward through them on DVR? We talk about the opening credits to both True Blood and Dexter as great movies, but is there a great theme song...you know, that The Who didn’t already make famous?

There’s a lot more TV talk in there, including some talk about Mad Men and 30 Rock and how the Emmys gives up on the writing category by allowing shows to submit more than one script. And yes, we talk a little football.

How far away are we from NBC running football every night? It crushes in the ratings, so why not put on a game every night? Ufford thinks if the NFL can figure out the schedules, we’ll eventually have games on five nights a week. I’m sure our families will love that.

Lastly, we talk about some of the biggest surprises of the early NFL season, including the Jets and the 49ers, and discuss what’s not surprising, like the Lions and Rams looking pretty terrible. And we get the low down on why Ufford’s really a Seahawks fan. Is it because he’s from out there, or because he kinda looks like a Hasselbeck brother?

Thanks to Matt for joining us, finally. Thanks to you for listening.
