Nick and I talk a lot about the British Open and the anonymity of Louis Oosthuizen. Even ESPN didn’t know who he was, which was kinda nice, actually.

We debate the need for the debate golf analysts always have about if he’s the next big star or a one-hit wonder for majors. Look at this list, and see how many people win ONE major. It’s a big list.

Print’s Not Dead:

We touch on the Fanhouse/LeBron story from the weekend. Here’s what I wrote for TSB:

Dwyane Wade’s Comments Were Lost In Transcription

Tim Potvak of Fanhouse wrote a story Sunday on the supporting cast to the big three in Miami, getting comments from Dwyane Wade – doing a week’s worth of charity work at the time – about the pressure of winning now that his team has a rather unprecedented (and top-heavy) roster. Here’s how Wade was quoted in the initial version of the story:

“We’re going to be wearing a bullseye,” Wade said. “But that’s what you play for. If we lose a couple in a row this season, it will be like the World Trade (Center) is coming down again.”

Not long after the story was posted, it was updated, with the quote changed to this:

“We’re going to be wearing a bullseye. But that’s what you play for,” Wade said. “We enjoy the bullseye. Plus, there’s going to be times when we lose 2-3 games in a row, and it seems like the world has crashed down. You all are going to make it seem like the World Trade is coming down again, but it’s not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games.”

The initial correction updated the pull-quote as well, but in the version posted as of Monday morning, the pull-quote was taken out of the story altogether. The story also included this disclaimer at the top:

Editor’s Note: Because of a transcription error, an earlier version of this story contained an incorrect quote from Dwyane Wade. The full and accurate version of the quote is contained in this story. We deeply regret the error.

It was good of Fanhouse to admit the mistake. Everyone knew what Wade meant in the first quote, yet adding in the line, “but it’s not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games” could change the tenor for some and certainly takes out any doubt of his intent. So, was this a PR-spin job by Wade’s camp, or something caught after-the-fact by the Fanhouse editors to soften the story?

Regardless, the lesson for athletes should always be: don’t compare your sport to any devastating event, even if you bring up said event to illustrate how much your sport is not like that event. Be safe, and keep death and catastrophe out of future sports metaphors.

Housekeeping:

There will be a few changes coming this week to my working (and writing) situation. We talk about it as much as I can on the show. That’s all I really feel like writing, so please try to listen to the last 8-9 minutes.

Thanks, as always.

Shane Bacon and I had scheduled to talk this week about the British Open -- aka the Open Championship -- for several reasons. First, Bacon habitually comes on to preview big golf events. But in this case, the second reason is the best: Bacon caddied at St. Andrews for an entire summer. If anyone knows the course, it's Shane.

We go almost hole-by-hole to talk about what some of the players will have to deal with this weekend. Go to OpenGolf.com to follow along with the conversation.

We get talking about some of the favorites, namely Tiger Woods, and bring up Jay Busbee's column on Devil Ball Golf about the chances of Tiger Woods winning this even. So why not conference Busbee in!

The rest of the show is a pretty good breakdown of who will do well and who could struggle on a course like St. Andrews. Both the Yahoo guys think Justin Rose could win the tournament. If you've followed Bacon's track record of picks on our show, expect Rose to miss the cut.

Thanks to both of them for hopping on. Thanks to you for listening.

Second we talk about the World Cup. I’ll admit I had hoped to talk more about England and France than we did. I’m still really worked up about the USMNT victory that was taken away.

Last, we discuss the passing of Manute Bol. A sad story, but an inspiring man.

Thanks for listening.

Three amazing items to discuss today. First, the game seven tonight. Then, Nick and I give a detailed breakdown of the US Open with a good combination of stats and conjecture to help you pick a winner. Note, we both think Phil might just win this one.

Then, Jon Tannenwald of The Goalkeeper joins the show to talk about the World Cup thus far. We spend most of the time on the USMNT, talking about the merits of Jose Torres and comparing his play to that of a point guard in the Princeton offense. Also, will they win? They have to win.

Thanks for listening. Enjoy the sports this weekend.

Nick and I talk about the goings on in sports this weekend. We talk about the perfect game and wonder if the reporters writing about it felt they had to write the perfect game story. Also, when do you start writing that game story, because on a normal day you'd be writing throughout the entire game. Is that the case, or at some point do you stop as not to jinx what you're watching?

Also, Dallas Braden provided a great story on Mother's Day, having lost his to cancer when he was younger. But is this the beginning of some great things for him, or will be be one of the few "who the heck is that guy" names on the list of 19 men to ever throw a perfect game.

We also touch on Jamie Moyer's amazing two-hitter and have a conversation about how wins really mean absolutely nothing to indicate how well a pitcher threw.

We shift to golf to talk about Tim Clark finally becoming a PGA bride after all the years as a bridesmaid. Quite a tournament to get his first PGA win, too. Oh, and some guy named Tiger has a neck thing. That'll dominate the headlines, eh?

We also touch on the English Premiership. Did you know Chelsea needed a win to bring home the championship and won 8-0 this weekend. Yikes. Can't wait for the playoffs to start. Oh, that's right, Bill Simmons reminded me last week that there aren't playoffs.

Speaking of playoffs, lots of that kind of talk in NHL and NBA later in the week. Click to listen.
