ON THE DL
Gatti’s Murder, Lesnar’s Heel Turn, Derby Night & Why We Can’t Root For Lance
Fighting, murder, home runs and guys on bikes. Yep, it’s the middle of July.
Reportedly, Rodrigues told police the two had gotten into a fight on Friday where Gatti pushed her to the ground. Then he ends up dead, and she was in the residence police found his body in for nearly 10 hours without, reportedly, noticing Gatti was in fact dead.
That sounds entirely believable.
The worst part of the story is that there is a one-year old boy involved, who is the couple’s son. And of course, the wife is claiming Gatti was drunk and there must have been a third party involved.
While it’s probably not fair to take two stories and cast a wide net on May-December romances, but on the heels of Steve McNair’s murder, we discuss if athletes might want to think twice before getting involved with younger women. It’s most likely pure coincidence, but just to be safe, all the former athletes in their late 30s who have wives/girlfriends/mistresses in their early 20s....be nice next weekend.
The Weekend That Was:
Better his than yours, right?
People are up in arms at Lesnar’s behavior, explaining that the way he acted isn’t how a champion should act. Yes, it seems men who pummel each other in cages for money, too have a code of decency.
Pardon us while we call BS on this. Dana White is a fight promoter and Brock Lesnar just crossed over into the mega-mainstream with his antics. He’s a real life heel, and with one promo cut after his UFC title match-- ironically something he was never great at in WWE -- he’s the most marketable man in the business.
The fact is, White is undoubtedly upset that Lesnar pissed on a sponsor. That’s it. Lesnar claims that Bud Light didn’t pay him, and I’m sure White made it clear that much of his reported three-million dollar payday came from money provided by sponsors...namely Bud Light. So in a way, Lesnar did get paid by them, and seemed to apologize when he got to the post match presser.
Everyone is talking about Brock. Heck, even WWE announcer/executive Jim Ross was chiming in. And a future opponent, Shane Carwin, had this to say about Lesnar’s antics on his website: “He may be a Champion but he has a long ways to go before he earns the respect of a Champion. The fans are why we do this Brock, this sport is not about fat paychecks and drama it is about hard work and sacrifice for a shot to do what you did last night.”
I think Lesnar does it for the fat paychecks. And if he keeps winning, and keeps up this hate-me-if-you-dare attitude, the paychecks will keep getting fatter.
Talking Baseball:
Also of note, if you plan to watch the Derby you’ll see ESPN’s home run tracker, which they claim will tell us before a ball is over the fence if it’ll be a home run or not. This completely unnecessary bit of technology could make the Derby the greatest one yet, or could totally ruin it. I’m not sure there’s much middle ground.
Soapbox:
But that doesn’t mean he’s likable. And that doesn’t mean we have to root for him, right? What is it about Lance Armstrong that we reject? Is it the Sheryl Crowe and Matthew McConaughey stuff? There has to be something that we don’t like to be seemingly (and actively) rooting against him.
Or is it because of the media, and the mainstream pop culture people who hound to our sports stars and make them celebrities? Brett Favre’s skills have diminished, yet he holds teams and an entire league hostage every summer. But Armstrong just rides a bike. Are we rejecting him, or the pedestal he’s been put on?
Thanks for checking out the show today. Root for Ryan Howard tonight. Pujols doesn’t even want to be there.
