PODCAST: ON THE DL
PODCAST: ON THE DL
Friday. We made it through another week. Barely. Today we talk about Jay Cutler, the FInal Four, the start of baseball season, Don Cherry’s flamboyance, Bill Simmons and my own mental health. In that order.
First, we discuss the trade of Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and two firsts and a third. I think the Broncos threw in a fifth as well (hopefully of whiskey). This kind of trade will take years to find a ‘winner’ so we look at it from a media standpoint. How did a team like the Washington Redskins, who have a serviceable quarterback who was a first-round draft pick and WANTS to be in Washington let it get out that they were pursuing Cutler? And if they were to let it get out, how did they not land Cutler.
Another PR mess in Washington. We discuss how other teams in the negotiation process may leak stuff as a form of sabotage and how agents are often leaks. Nick brings up the fact that many organizations, especially a place like Washington, probably has many disgruntled employees who love to dish on their bosses. Oh, and as a Broncos fan...good riddance.
Moving on...
We talk about the upcoming baseball season! In five minutes we run through each division winner and wild card. We don’t pick a World Series because the playoffs are all about matchups so who knows. And we make up the rules.
For those who want it in print, Nick picks Boston, Minnesota, Anaheim and Oakland in the AL. I pick Boston, Chicago, Anaheim (fine LAA..whatever) and the Yankees.
In the NL, Nick goes Philly, Milwuakee, Arizona and Chicago as the WC. I pick Philly, Cincinnati, LA and Chicago.
We also briefly touch on how we’d like Kansas City to be good, love the fact that Houston will be terrible and think the Mets have a bad clubhouse which may be why they are choking dogs. All in five minutes.
The Weekend That Is: We talk about the Final Four. We don’t break down the matchups so much as to break down what the best Championship game would be. We explain how the NCAA title game is the easiest ticket in all of sports and discuss how, unlike any other major sporting event, the NCAA Tournament is backwards -- we care more about the opening round than the championship round. We also discuss how terrible basketball is in football stadiums. It’s the worst idea in major sports not initialed BCS and they’ve gone too far to ever go back.
Email of the Week: Don Cherry’s Flamboyance. And people have been asking for my reaction to Bill Simmons saying that Kornheiser is “like my illegitimate dad.” You’ll have to listen, but I do question if illegitimacy can go up a generation. One can have an illegitimate son, but does that, in turn, made the dad illegitimate as well? I always thought legitimacy went one way. We’re not salmon after all.
But yes, I address some of the issues I’ve had with Simmons and equate his work to a TV show you grew up loving and turned on. Eventually, when you stop caring so much, maybe you find your way back. This turns into a monologue about my current mental state (if you listen carefully you can hear Nick backing away from his microphone). Again, it’s better if you listen.
Housekeeping: Big week next week with Marco from Storming the Floor previewing the title game, Dan Shanoff talking about Tebow (and hopefully more) and Shane Bacon (during Passover!) previewing the Masters.
Thank you as always. We wouldn’t be doing this if you people weren’t listening.
