I always hated when, around the holiday season, my favorite shows would be listed in the TV Guide as *NEW* but wouldn’t be anything more than a damn clip show with five minutes of “new” material only used to transition from one clip to the next.
So, with that, I ask this: what would you do, baby, without us? IT’S A CLIP SHOW!
The difference in our situation, of course, is that we’ve been gaining listeners over the course of the last few years, so you, dear reader, may not have been around to hear Rick Telander talk about running into Jay Mariotti in a sauna, or Ian Eagle tell the story of when Bill Raftery invented the term “Onions,” or when Tony Kornheiser called me a narcissist. (Note: all in the show).
There are hundreds of clips we could have pulled. Some of the notables NOT in the show include: Norman Chad telling us that Kornheiser is dead to him, Annie Duke talking about just getting back from speaking in front of a congressional committee on legalizing online gaming in America, Ed Rendell talking about the balance between being a sitting governor and a TV sports analyst, Mayor Michael Nutter telling me that the Phillies were going to win the World Series, months before they DID JUST THAT, Bob Ley talking to me on Skype from South Africa, Alexi Lalas (Rutgers Guy), Telling David Aldridge why he’s partly responsible for this show existing, Richard Deitsch of SI hijacking the show, AJ Benza hijacking the show, Rich Eisen hijacking the show, Stephen A. Smith (finally) hijacking the show, Trey Wingo telling me how ESPN’s origins were like a blog, the huge list of friends and bloggers and friends who became bloggers and bloggers who became friends who have been on the show. And of course…Chuck Norris.
None of that made the cut.
But what did, in order, are these clips:
• Tony Kornheiser talking about Twitter, then calling me a narcissist.
• Michael Wilbon talking about newspapers, blogs and his decision to stay at the Washington Post when he started his ESPN NBA gig.
• Rick Telander telling us how, earlier that day, he ran into Jay Mariotti in a sauna.
• Buzz Bissinger talking about Shattered Glass, Murray Chass and the importance (or lack of importance) of editors.
• Ian Darke talking about his call of Landon Donovan’s World Cup goal, and explaining if he said “Go, Go, USA” or “Goal, Goal, USA.”
• Steve Sabol of NFL Films talking about his favorite game, and explaining the fascinating history behind the term “Frozen Tundra.”
• Darren Rovell of CNBC talking about luxury boxes and how arena/stadium owners may eventually have to blow them up.
• Dan LeBatard explaining his run in with Emeril Lagasse and why he started using the term “BAM” on PTI.
• Kenny Mayne taking out his trash while sharing the back story to “It’s never iffy if it’s Griffey.”
• Ernie Johnson talking about having to sit down on live TV — more than once — with Charles Barkley after very public transgressions.
• Ian Eagle explaining — and impersonating — how Bill Raftery started using the term “Onions.”
Thanks to everyone who’s ever been on the show, or listened, or downloaded and said they’d listen later and never did. If you all would be so kind as to share this with your friends, I think it’s a pretty good representation of what we’ve done.
